Introduction

The Plant Logistics - Rail Attendant supports safe and efficient plant logistics operations by performing rail car switching, movement, inspection, and basic locomotive operation within plant rail yards. This role executes defined tasks under established procedures to ensure rail shipments are positioned, assembled, and prepared in accordance with operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform rail car switching, coupling, and uncoupling activities to assemble and break down trains within plant rail yards.
  • Safely move rail cars and locomotives over designated tracks, following operating rules, signals, and supervisor instructions.
  • Set and release hand brakes; connect and disconnect air hoses; operate track switches to properly route rail cars.
  • Conduct routine inspections of rail cars, locomotives, tracks, and related equipment to identify defects or service needs.
  • Monitor gauges (oil, air, steam, water levels) and perform basic refueling and fluid servicing of locomotives as required.
  • Ride rail cars in approved positions during switching operations and use hand signals, radios, or lanterns to communicate with crew members and engineers.
  • Record rail car numbers, locations, and availability information accurately to support logistics coordination.
  • Work as part of a logistics and rail operations team to ensure plant shipping and receiving schedules are met safely and efficiently.
  • Comply with all safety, environmental, and operational policies while working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Follows established procedures, work instructions, and safety rules.
  • Identifies straightforward equipment or operational issues and escalates concerns to supervisors.
  • Responds appropriately to changing rail and yard conditions using approved guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member in a logistics and operations environment.
  • Clear verbal communication skills for coordinating movements and safety activities.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required with minimum of 1 year experience in locomotive operation or rail car switching operations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities, team and meeting facilitation skills, and organization capabilities are required.
  • Candidate must be customer-focused and results-driven, developing in problem-solving and analyzing issues, and have the ability to effectively collaborate and work with personnel at various levels throughout the facility and company.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting plant logistics, shipping, or industrial rail yard operations.
  • Familiarity with industrial safety standards and rail operating practices.
