Introduction

Seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Hazard Communication Specialist to support Chevron Phillips Chemical’s core product lines in the petrochemical industry. The Hazard Communication Specialist plays a crucial role in supplying information regarding the safety and regulatory compliance of our products. This position is responsible for authoring and maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and labels in accordance with various global regulatory hazard communication schemes. Additionally, the Hazard Communication Specialist role involves providing technical support and guidance by reviewing country-specific regulations related to hazard communication and assessing the impact of product classification and labeling according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

Responsibilities

  • Partners with Chemical Complianace, product lines and technology groups to define product composition prior to SDS creation; works with business and transportation representatives to ensure correct international transportation information is assigned to CPChem products 
  • Ensures adherence to UN Purple Book (Globally Harmonized System) for chemicals in commerce; stays up-to-date on revisions; participates in UN Purple Book revisions 0
  • Coordinates processes to ensure compliance with regional and Global Hazard Communication Standards; serves as HazCom SME
  • Manages the SDS Distribution Process via web interface, external website, third party asscociates, etc.; ensures accessibility and provides training, where applicable; maintains partnership with product lines and internal representatives for SDS posting determination
  • Manages MSDS Maker
  • Manages SDS templates, SDS phrases, SDS translations.                      
  • Creates Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for various regions in English and additional languages by using SAP EHSS module, assigns materials to SDSs
  • Participates in Product Risk Management Teams (PRMT) to establish, maintain and document hazard, exposure and risk characterization (HERC) processes to determine appropriate risk management actions to reduce risks of products in commerce
  • Maintains customer contact and handles inquiries related to our products and liaises with appropriate business contacts; coordinates responses with customers; monitors SDS mailbox and the hotline
  • Coordinates semi-annual review of required ERC data uploads in SAP EHSS Module; reviews associated rule-sets (provided by SAP via regulation changes) and ensures accuracy
  • Participate in SCHC (Society of Chemical Hazard Communication) and other industry and government association partnerships to ensure current and future global hazard communication regulations and policies are monitored; acts on behalf of CPChem to help guide regulatory changes
  • Manages SDS access process during inaccessible periods (i.e., emergencies, loss of power, etc.) for both CPChem and vendors
  • Maintains company-wide SDS LMS training; provides updates training material as needed

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or closely related field
  • At least 7 years of petrochemical/chemical industry experience
  • Sound understanding of basic chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology or similar topics
  • Familiar with global labels data management
  • Familiar with domestic and international regulations, including OSHA, DOT, IATA, IMDG, Reach-like, and GHS
  • Familiar with Dangerous Goods data management
  • Experience in interfacing with regulatory agencies, evaluating, and complying with regulatory requirements
  • Experience participating in trade association groups

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM)
  • Certified Professional Product Steward (CPPS)
  • Experience with Multi Model Dangerous Goods (DOT, IATA, IMDG)
  • Familiar with authoring Safety Data Sheets utilizing ERP systems such as SAP
