This position supervises mentors and provides guidance to engineering and technical professionals who design and implement manufacturing technology to automate manufacturing production processes and equipment to achieve process safety and business objectives.

This position ensures continuous improvement in process, cost, quality and production. Directs and is responsible for all Advanced Process Control (APC) and resolves APC problems.  This position leads and directs the work of others, provides strategic and daily feedback and process optimization tactics to plant operating personnel and improvement of data management tools used by operations to control, monitor, analyze and react to manufacturing processes.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for technical and professional development of the Advanced Process Control group that includes approximately eight engineers and professional technical personnel.
  • Overall responsibility for improving, developing and implementing control strategies that improve facility safety, profitability and efficiency.
  • Responsible for the development, support, maintenance, programming, and implementation of advanced process control applications, process optimization, process simulation, process information management systems, asset management, yields and accounting, environmental reporting software, and alarm management database systems.
  • Responsible for managing facility APC Aspen Tech DMCplus, Pavilion Perfector applications and the regulatory control strategies and develop new control applications by utilizing emerging cutting-edge technologies, including backup support in multiple DCS platforms, APC applications, process simulation systems, process information systems and multiple database infrastructures such as Oracle, MS SQL, and proprietary vendor data bases.
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining advanced regulatory control schemes, tuning strategies, cascade control strategies and multivariable model-based controllers.
  • Ensures APC involvement in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), HAZOPS (Hazards and Operability Study) and LOPA (Layers of Protection Analysis) studies, FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis) action item follow-up and PSSR (Pre-Startup Safety Reviews).
  • Ensure that the Alarm Documentation and Rationalization (D&R) / Alarm Objective Analysis (AOA) activities are performed and implemented in the DCS.
  • Manage support and/or coordinate capital and expense projects in the $5M to $2MM cost range for the implementation of APC strategies, process optimization, process simulation, alarm management, and process information management systems.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years olefins, polyethylene or alpha-olefins manufacturing experience or equivalent with increasing responsibilities in technical, operations or engineering organizations.
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience is preferred. Previous APC experience in a petrochemical facility or equivalent is also preferred.
  • Must exhibit and have demonstrated process and personnel safety leadership and have an excellent safety record, adhere to and promote use of tenets of operation and lifesaving rules.
  • Must possess strong coaching, mentoring and influencing skills.
  • Must have experience managing multiple assignments, people, and projects, in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and judgment in utilizing the appropriate management style (i.e., directing, coaching, facilitating, participating, delegating).
  • Ensure that key group processes are continuously improved, incorporating and institutionalizing enterprise learning.
  • Have applied knowledge of Industry and Chevron Phillips design codes and practices, inherently safe design practices, process safety, pressure relief systems, process risk-mitigation, and a commitment to personnel safety.
  • Have the ability to develop clear and detailed organizational objectives and strategies.
  • Have excellent problem-solving skills and be able to think quickly and adeptly about how to address problems as they come up and influence long term solutions.
  • Be able to multi-task including an ability to switch quickly between tasks and to operate on many different levels at once.
