Chevron Phillips is currently seeking a Polymer Scientist to join the Polymer Science Group within the Research & Technology (R&T) organization in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. 


The Polymer Science Group engages in R&D activities in areas related to polymer characterization, polymer rheology, polymer processing, polymer stabilization, and polymer finishing.  The incumbent will provide expert technical support to various groups and customers to solve challenges related to mechanical property and durability of polyethylene (PE) resins and products. In addition, this individual will establish robust and sustained research projects to understand the relationship between the molecular architecture and durability of polyethylene and translate that knowledge to meaningful estimation of the performance in specific applications and service life. 



  • Demonstrate leadership in safety. Participate in all safety, environmental and sustainability initiatives set forth by the company, and strive to uphold and improve the safety culture of the company
  • Understand and follow all safety and environmental principles, procedures, and regulations
  • Provide expert support in PE durability characterization methods and data analysis.
  • Act as a technical expert to various internal groups in solving challenges related to PE resin durability
  • Serve as a company resource for development of new test methods and data analyses with the primary goal of providing a fundamental understanding of PE resin durability  
  • Identify root-causes and safely apply standard and non-standard, custom tests for problem-solving and/ or to address customer’s requests / challenges
  • Ability to respond to fast evolving challenges and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Provide expertise on applying PE resin durability properties to estimate PE resins’ actual performance in end-use applications and service life of PE products
  • Participate in current research and development initiatives of the company and contribute to the existing research projects of the group
  • Identify opportunities to augment competitive advantage beneficial to company business and initiate and conduct robust research projects in those areas
  • Utilize analytical skills including statistical and chemometric analysis in research projects
  • Maintain the optimum performance of the existing lab instruments and support the supervisor / manager in improving the mechanical property characterization capability of the group
  • Build and maintain relationships with peers, customers, and business partners

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD degree in mechanical engineering, polymer science (chemistry or physics), or material science and engineering
  • A minimum of 2 years of working experience and/or training in mechanical testing of PE, and in-depth knowledge in polymer durability, fracture mechanics, in-service performance estimation of PE products, and structure/property relationship of various grades of PE resins
  • Familiar with semi-crystalline polymers and their properties, mechanics and fracture mechanics principles of viscoelastic materials, and service life estimates
  • Ability to perform routine mechanical tests (e.g. Strain Hardening Modulus, Tensile, Creep, Slow Crack Growth etc.) of the mechanical and durability properties of PE resins
  • Strong communication (both oral and written) skills in technical and non-technical business environment
  • Excellent computing and data processing skills and a familiarity with Microsoft Office products and other relevant software

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD degree in mechanical engineering
  • 1 year or more of job-related work experience in an industrial setting
  • Knowledge and experience in scripting software language
