The Pilot Plant Research Engineer is responsible for the execution and advancement of research campaigns for the Polyethylene Pilot Plant. Research Engineers are at the forefront of Chevron Phillips’ technological advancements and discoveries.  This paves the trail for the commercial and licensee plants. Research Engineers provide technical support and troubleshoot operational issues related to new and existing technologies. Research Engineers help coordinate the day-to-day plant activities as well as long term improvement and research projects.  The successful candidate will exhibit strong safety leadership, initiative, teamwork, excellent written and verbal communication skills, assertive decision-making, and a strong operational or research background.  The Research Engineer will work with a diverse team across numerous departments at levels spanning from unit operators to business managers to ensure all safety, environmental, research and cost goals are met.

Responsibilities:

 

Operations – (Shared responsibility) Responsible for the day-to-day process monitoring of all aspects of the 24/7 PE Pilot Plant. Troubleshoots operational problems related to novel technology and equipment problems. Develops and exhibits expertise in process equipment and pilot scale applications.    

 

Project Execution – Responsible for the execution of improvement and capital projects supporting the PE pilot unit. Using expertise, develop recommendations, project scopes, and preliminary designs for new equipment to meet technology goals and advance research programs.   

 

Research – As part of a larger team, conduct and design process studies and structured R&D programs.  This includes process optimization, process improvement, and the evaluation of novel technologies.  Compiles and analyzes research data from pilot unit experimentation. Expected to use and interpret data to solve complicated scale-up problems and improve technology transfer and evaluation. Participates in scale up of processes including technology transfer to commercial units when appropriate. May participate or assist with technical problems or training at plants, customers or licensees. Travels to commercial facilities to support research campaigns and goals.

 

Safety and Compliance - Acts as a safety leader within the group, champions safety with every decision made, and supports Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.  Assists in addressing all safety and environmental issues promptly.  Follows and executes site policies for Management of Change, Process Hazard Analysis, Incident Investigation and Reporting, PSM procedures and chapters, and other safe work practices.  

 

Communication - Maintains open and effective communication across all shifts of operators, unit leadership, other operating units, business groups, and other functional support personnel. Assists in preparation of Daily Operating Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and campaign execution documentation. Prepares written reports, and presentations summarizing design studies and/or research campaign results.  Is available to operators off hours when his/her research campaign is active.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering with at least 3 years of industrial experience OR a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
  • Proven communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Polyethylene experience
  • Research or operations experience
