Chevron Phillips Chemical is currently seeking a Lab Technician to join our facility in Orange, TX.  Employees in this position receive directions from the Laboratory Supervisor.  The Lab Technician is responsible for the receiving of plant samples, collecting samples from various locations within the plant, the safe performance of laboratory tests, and the reporting of lab data. Responsibilities include the performance of routine procedures, test methods, and activities on samples and materials that support unit processes and product movement. Other job duties include basic instrument troubleshooting, quality assurance/quality control activities, communicating with all levels of plant operations along with other non-testing activities as required. This position requires working a 12-hour rotating shift including nights, holidays, weekends, and overtime as necessary.


This position requires the successful candidate to perform routine testing and analytical data entry. Instrumental analyses include the following types of equipment: gas chromatograph, FTIR, X-ray, densitometer, and other instrumentation. Familiarity with physical testing such as melt index is a plus. The job duties also include collecting samples from various locations within the plant and certification of product shipments. This position requires a familiarity with LIMS databases, Chromatography Data Systems and SQC methods along with certification of product shipments. High degree of computer skills (software applications: Word, Excel, etc.) are required. Perform other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years work experience in a Quality Control Lab in the petrochemical field OR a degree in chemistry or biochemistry.
  • Mathematical aptitude.
  • Must be proficient with MS Word and Excel.
  • Able to lift a minimum of 35 pounds.
  • Able to act in accordance with established safety guidelines and processes.
  • Must be a team player and possess both analytical skills and excellent verbal skills.
  • Must have excellent time-management and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of testing equipment such as Melt Indexers, X-rays, Presses, FTIR and GCs.
