Purpose/Introduction

The Dispute Resolution group of the Legal department provides advice and counsel on disputed matters, including pre-dispute counseling, dispute avoidance and mitigation, and dispute resolution, which includes overall matter management, strategic advising, and day-to-day oversight of disputed matters in any tribunal, potentially worldwide.  This position is an individual contributor role that serves as the liaison between the businesses and retained counsel, managing litigation matters in several areas, with a focus on commercial litigation, products liability, personal injury, and other corporate and business unit-focused work.

 

 

CPChem is seeking qualified candidates with relevant experience and a passion for helping clients achieve business objectives to serve as EHS&S Counsel/Senior Counsel. The position is based in CPChem’s headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas, and reports to the Associate General Counsel - EHS&S and Manufacturing. CPChem's legal department numbers over 50 professionals, which includes over 20 lawyers.

This position requires the ability to work autonomously and to regularly interact with core EHS&S and Manufacturing internal stakeholders, which will include some interaction with CPChem senior management. Candidates must possess the judgment and skills necessary to advise subject matter experts, managers, executives, and other clients regarding a broad range of; environmental, health and safety matters, including air, waste, water, remediation with a specific focus in Texas; personal and process safety management issues; product safety and stewardship, sustainability and climate, and security. The position will also be responsible for supporting strategic initiatives, global EHS&S policy development, compliance counseling, client training programs, and working directly and extensively with EHS&S and Manufacturing clients in CPChem's facilities. The successful candidate must consistently demonstrate teamwork, cross-functional collaboration, and be a positive opinion leader in a dynamic environment that may include periods of compressed deadlines and high-demand.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel EHS&S and Manufacturing internal client stakeholders on core personal and process safety legal and regulatory issues, including compliance, incident investigations and reporting, audits and compliance reviews, and policy and program documentation.
  • Advise and train client contacts on legal and regulatory updates in the relevant EHS&S topics, including process and personal safety.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to company stakeholders, applying judgment to effectively communicate and make recommendations considering the needs of our business, balanced with potentially applicable compliance requirements.
  • Work effectively as a loyal and productive member of cross-functional teams.
  • Provide frontline assistance to company leaders and key stakeholders in times of crisis or responding to governmental / agency investigations.

Required Qualifications

  • JD from a nationally accredited law school with a strong academic background.
  • Licensed by, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Texas. If admitted to another state bar, licensure in Texas must be accomplished within 90 days of start date
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in one or more of the following disciplines: environmental or safety compliance with a focus on air, waste, water, process safety, personal safety, incident response, risk management, and/or product safety and stewardship.
  • In-house counsel experience preferred
  • Meaningful experience or technical background in supporting chemical or oil and gas facility operations, specifically to include EPA and/or TCEQ regulatory requirements. Experience negotiating with OSHA, TCEQ, and EPA considered a plus.
