Chevron Phillips is seeking a Tax Analyst to join the Finance organization on the Transaction Tax team at The Woodlands, TX headquarters location. This role is responsible for the excise tax compliance function at Chevron Phillips.


The Finance Department aims to be a trusted partner that adds value by protecting the company’s financial integrity, guiding sound business decisions and offering enriching careers in a collaborative workplace. Finance oversees financial planning and fiscal management for Chevron Phillips Chemical including accounting, financing activities, planning, and tax compliance. The department provides financial information, policy analyses and recommendations that drive sound decision-making.


This position is eligible for the current hybrid work model (split of remote and office-based days).


  • Preparation and filing of monthly federal and state motor fuel excise tax returns along with subsequent reconciliation to SAP general ledger.
  • Preparation and filing of monthly Canadian GST/HST/QST returns along with subsequent reconciliation to SAP general ledger
  • Management of both federal and state customer exemption certificates
  • Coordination of the ExSTARS terminal operators report.
  • Direct contact, both written and verbal, with the IRS and numerous state tax departments regarding reporting requirements, tax amendments, and assessments.
  • Direct customer contact on an ongoing basis regarding tax advice and taxability.
  • Review status of all current and new transactions and products. Maintain compliance with all state and federal excise tax requirements.
  • Monitor and research impact of pending tax law changes.
  • Coordinate motor vehicle licensing of all applicable states, countries and cities.
  • Provide training throughout the company to ensure compliance with excise tax laws and regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 1+ years experience in a tax related field 
  • Effective communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal excise tax, state fuels tax and state and local sales and use tax
  • Experience with SAP and strong spreadsheet skills
  • 2+ years of accounting or tax experience
  • CPA or other professional certifications
  • State income tax or International tax compliance experience
  • Experience with Corptax compliance software
  • Experience using tax research platforms like Thompson RIA, BNA, or International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD)
  • Experience with accounting computer systems (SAP, Essbase, or others)
