Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (CPChem) is seeking a Laboratory Technician to work in the Polymer Science Group of its Research & Technology (R&T) organization in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.  The Polymer Science Group engages in R&D activities in areas related to polymer characterization, polymer rheology, polymer processing, polymer stabilization, and polymer finishing.  This position will be in an area that supports a large cross-section of customers including various research groups at the R&T, the pilot plant, manufacturing plants, the technical service, and the product and application development.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Perform work following Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and in full compliance with all safety, environmental and health regulations, and procedures.
  • Perform large volume of routine tests independently in the laboratory utilizing lab instruments/equipment.
  • Perform data collection, charting, recording, and archiving, transmittal to customers, on a regular and ongoing basis. Occasionally, limited data analysis is required as well.
  • Calibrate laboratory instruments and equipment regularly or as needed.
  • Upkeep, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory instruments and equipment. 
  • Coordinate and participate in service calls with the vendors/instrument manufacturers and work with vendors/instrument manufacturers in services/troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Safeguard all test results via good documentation and archiving practices using traditional and electronic methods. Must be able to learn and use electronic notebook (ELN) for data and records documentation.
  • Monitor the inventory of essential laboratory supplies and timely order supplies and services in accordance to company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to learn two or more different polymer characterization techniques, preferably, rheology, GPC, aTREF, and DSC, and related software. Must be flexible to work in different polymer characterization laboratories as situation demands.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and roll a 600 lbs. liquid nitrogen or helium dewar mounted on wheels or stainless-steel cart.
  • Ability to travel and participate in plant trials in manufacturing plants located outside of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED OR an associate degree with at least 1 year of work experience in a laboratory/research setting.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.).
  • Ability to work independently, from work planning to execution, with minimal supervision after initial on-the-job training.
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills. An ability to work well with other group members, research personnel and customers in a team environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science related field.
  • Knowledge and experience in polymer rheology and/or chromatography (especially in GPC/SEC and hyphenated GPC/SEC).
  • Prior knowledge and expereince with various polymer characterization instruments/equipment troubleshooting and maintenance tasks.     
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following polymer characterization techniques: Rheology, GPC, aTREF, DSC, DMA, MALS, NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopy.
