Purpose/Introduction

The NAO Research Engineer is responsible for the execution and advancement of research campaigns for the Normal Alpha Olefins (NAO) Pilot Plants. Research Engineers are at the forefront of Chevron Phillips’ technological advancements and discoveries.  This paves the trail for the commercial and licensee plants. Research Engineers provide technical support and troubleshoot operational issues related to new and existing technologies. Research Engineers help coordinate the day-to-day plant activities as well as long term improvement and research projects.  The successful candidate will exhibit strong safety leadership, initiative, teamwork, excellent written and verbal communication skills, assertive decision-making, and a strong operational and/or research background. Research Engineers work with a diverse team across numerous departments at levels spanning from unit operators to business managers to ensure all safety, environmental, research and cost goals are met.

Responsibilities

Plant Operations 

  • Responsible for day-to-day operations and process monitoring of 24/7 operated pilot plants, which includes off-hour support.
  • Serve as SME of the NAO pilot plants and processes.
  • Provide daily instructions and work lists for unit operators.
  • Be available to unit operators during off hours for direction and support as requested.
  • Troubleshoot operational challenges related to novel technologies and equipment, working directly with maintenance personnel when applicable.
  • Develop expertise in pilot scale process equipment and applications.
  • Assist the Training Coordinator with the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new processes or tasks.
  • Assist the NAO Operations Specialist and Operations Engineer with operational logistics associated with the pilot plants.

Responsibilities (continued)

Research

  • Conduct and design process studies and structured R&T programs as part of a larger, cross-functional team.
  • Prepare written reports and presentations to communicate applicable results to stake-holders on all levels of R&T and business units.
  • Analyze historical and/or real time process data to assess areas for process optimization, process improvement, and the evaluation of novel technologies.
  • May participate or assist with troubleshooting or training at commercial facilities as requested.
  • Maintain working relationships with local (BRTC) and off-site (KRTC) research laboratory personnel.

Project Execution 

  • Responsible for the execution of improvement and capital projects supporting the NAO pilot pilots.
  • Develop recommendations, project scopes, and preliminary designs for new equipment to meet technology goals and advance research programs.
  • Maintain working relationships with local Project Engineering and Design Engineering groups.

Safety and Compliance

  • Champion safety within all decisions and acts as a safety leader within the operations team.
  • Support all requests of the site Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) and Process Safety Management (PSM) teams.
  • Participate and/or facilitate in the Management of Change (MOC) process.
  • Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) as requested.
  • Participate and/or facilitate in incident investigations.
  • Remain up to date on all required training modules.
  • Actively champion all site and corporate safe work practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering with at least 3 years of industrial experience OR a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills commensurate with job responsibilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research or operations experience.
