Purpose/Introduction

The Furnace Operations Specialist is an individual contributor who supports the furnaces for Cedar Bayou Ethylene areas in 1594 and 1592 with operational and mechanical expertise.  The Furnace Operations Specialist’s primary focus is on mid-to-long term furnace improvements with specific emphasis on improving furnace operations and developing plans to improve reliability.  The Specialist will also aid in troubleshooting near term issues and serve as a resource to the operations and technical groups. The successful candidate has responsibility to plan, prioritize, coordinate and align the units’ activities to ensure that EHS and operating targets are met.

Responsibilities

  • Use Tenets of Operation and the Operating Hierarchy as core tools to drive decision making and behavior. Drives the focus on Operational Discipline and strives to ensure all operational tasks are performed correctly every time.
  • Ensure adherence to, and role model, the Chevron Phillips Chemicals Company LP Tenets of Operation, Life Saving Rules, EHSS Procedures, PSM and OE Processes, and Environmental Permit compliance.
  • Model and reinforces ICARE principles.
  • Identify and address issues as they arise in order to ensure safe and compliant operations
  • Interface with all departments within the organization as needed
  • Foster learning culture by teaching operators, day staff, and support groups Ethylene Furnace related techniques, troubleshooting and operation
  • Provide support for development and execution of furnace area projects
  • Troubleshoot unit instrumentation, alarms, and controllers for long term solutions and helps reduce console alarms and improve alarm management metric performance
  • Participates in the Analyzer Improvement Team and ensure that high priority furnace analyzers are being maintained and kept online and accurate by making recommendations that may involve getting vendor or Kingwood advice and troubleshooting

Responsibilities (continued)

  • Support incident investigations by being a resource to provide and review effective corrective actions and preventative measures and follow up with their effectiveness
  • Is the site lead for the FRIT for 1592 and 1594 Ethylene Units and support best practice sharing and process improvement initiatives
  • Keep the Unit Superintendents informed of unusual operating situations, status of projects, and other matters that warrant attention
  • Resolves recurring furnace reliability and operational issues that impact furnace availability and optimization by engaging with Ethylene staff and shift to make and execute recommendations
  • Analyzes data for operational consistency and correctness, and initiates improvement recommendations with staff for startup, feed-in/feed-out, decoke, and shut down procedures, and decoke schedules
  • Monitors steam drum chemistry reports and participate in chemical treatment program meetings with operations day staff as well as acting as liaison between 1092 and 1594 Utilities Units on water chemistry to make improvement recommendations on boiler feed water quality
  • Ensures proper burner maintenance and cleaning and refractory tile repairs are being conducted by monitoring burner performance as well as stays informed on latest burner technologies to make improvement recommendations

Responsibilities (continued)

  • Attends EPC Conventions and brings new furnace practices and technology opportunities to site
  • Interacts with Central Olefins Engineering, Other Company Ethylene Units, Licensors, Reliability, and Vendors to aid in improving furnace reliability as well as ensuring best practices are shared and utilized to and from other CPChem Ethylene sites
  • Is involved in furnace MOC’s by providing input and ensuring viability of changes prior to submission
  • Scrutinizes PHA revalidation findings and recommendations for correct applicability and consequence severity
  • Reviews and recommends any improvements to furnace PM and Retube outage scope and schedules, and long term decoke plans
  • Is a resource and mentor for the Operation Representative assigned to new furnace designs for activities such as construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup
  • This position will be on a 9/80 schedule or 4-10 schedule
  • This position reports to the Olefins and Utilities Operations Manager

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have successfully demonstrated leadership in Olefins hot side operation with a minimum of 15 years of experience in petrochemical operations.
  • Have liquid cracking experience in a liquid capable ethylene plant
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills and the ability to lead a team in continuous improvement of all focus areas listed above
  • Ability to assert and influence the appropriate sense of urgency as situations dictate
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues and recognize when to involve additional resources
  • Demonstrated the initiative to be a self-starter and individual contributor who can work with minimal supervision
  • Be adaptable from mid to long range issue solutions to a rapid paced, priority shifting environment
  • Capability to develop positive working relationships with associated work groups/people
  • Ability to evaluate, organize, prioritize, and follow-up on work to ensure alignment with the department's goals
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
