Purpose/Introduction

Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (CPChem) is seeking a Research Engineer or Scientist for the Catalyst and Process Development Team located in Kingwood (a residential suburb of Houston, TX).  #HPCP

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and health regulations, and procedures.
  • Design and conduct independent research projects for the use of heterogenous catalysis for the improvement of CPChem core technologies. Develop new solutions through catalysis.
  • Facilitate scale-up of catalyst through all stages of commercialization including invention, scale-up, catalyst synthesis/manufacturing, commercial installation, startup, and process monitoring.  
  • Provide process support to CPChem catalyst manufacturers and CPChem catalyst customers. This may include on-site support, catalyst loading support, catalyst startup support, remote troubleshooting of process upsets, and providing subject matter expertise as required for the improvement of CPChem or customer assets.
  • Effectively communicate with cross-functional teams of researchers, lab technicians, process engineers, third-parties, management and business.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering OR Ph.D. in Chemistry
  • Knowledge and experience with the synthesis, evaluation, and manufacture of heterogenous catalysts
  • Experience with tools used for catalyst characterization
  • Ability to compile complex experimental data and analyze for key performance metrics, extrapolate trends, and correlate results to present data driven conclusions
  • Knowledge and experience with lab-scale process equipment for the evaluation of catalyst performance using flammable and hazardous materials
  • Broad knowledge of the application of catalysis in the petrochemical, refining, or specialties chemical industries
  • Previous experience assigning work to laboratory process technicians to execute experimental plans
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate to all levels of an organization

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with heterogenous catalysis development as applied to selective hydrogenation catalysis, hydrotreating, hydrocracking, or desulfurization.
  • Development of kinetic factors and reactor models for heterogenous systems
  • At least 3 years of experience in the petrochemical laboratory, pilot plant, or catalyst manufacturing
  • Experience troubleshooting catalyst manufacturing or commercial catalyst systems in world scale chemical plants
