Purpose/Introduction

Chevron Phillips Chemical is seeking a Control Systems Technician to join the Technical Team for the Golden Triangle Polymers facility located in Orange, TX. This is an exciting opportunity to utilize your experience and be part of a team contributing to the design, startup, and operation of a new plant from the ground up.

 

Initially, this position will be more project focused ensuring systems are properly commissioned, and ready to support a safe, orderly, and timely start-up of the facility. Following startup, the job functions will transition to a more traditional control systems role characterized by normal plant operations.

 

This position will be assigned to the project location in Orange, TX and will transition to ongoing operations following commissioning and startup with an expected commitment through stable start-up operations.  #HPCP

Responsibilities

  • Provide operations with day-to-day DCS hardware and software needs including troubleshooting DCS & 3rd party systems connection issues, DCS graphics / control schemes / logic functions updates, additions of new DCS tags / logic functions/control schemes, etc.
  • Participate in project EPC, MAC, and third-party FATs/SATs as required
  • Review and comment on engineering design documents including but not limited to Instrument Loop Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Cabinet Layouts, P&IDs etc.
  • Review or develop Control Narratives, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Modbus Mappings, IO Assignment, etc.
  • Provide input, assistance, and troubleshooting with pre-commissioning and commissioning activities to ensure all Process Automation Systems and third-party control systems meet Company requirements prior to initial startup
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly PMs on the DCS and PLC systems to maintain the integrity of the system
  • Support and coordinate with reliability / instrumentation / electrical teams, construction team on loop checks and equipment startup / commissioning.

Responsibilities (continued)

  • Support Alarm Documentation and Rationalization (AOA) activities
  • Work closely with the Alarm Champion to implement new and updated alarms and adhere to Alarm Management Procedure
  • Work closely with process control engineers on APC initiatives.
  • Assist I&E Technicians in troubleshooting of control systems issues
  • Participating in the Management of Change process including hazard reviews, participating in larger HAZOP and LOPA studies, action item follow-up, and PSSRs
  • Support IT/ICS group on project specified and future initiatives regarding cyber security
  • Perform / coordinate control systems software and hardware upgrades
  • Support site in control system off-hour call out duties as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in instrumentation or electronics with at least 2 years of equivalent industry experience OR high school diploma with at least 5 years of equivalent industry experience, such as maintenance service work performed on DCS and PLC equipment
  • Proficient in reading and understanding design documents like P&IDs, instrument loop drawings, and schematics
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to engineers and non-engineers
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • A self-starter with the ability to guide and influence others

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in petrochemical manufacturing or refining
  • Experience with Emerson DeltaV Control System
  • Experience with Virtualization
  • Experience with Commissioning/Start-up
