Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) is seeking an Aromatics Superintendent to join our team at the Port Arthur facility in Port Arthur, Texas.  The primary role of this position is to manage and supervise all activities necessary to operate the Aromatics operating area, inclusive of the Cyclohexane Unit 1746, the Feed Prep Unit 1740, the Boiler Area 1041, and the Port Arthur dock system.  Work requires knowledge of process operations, process safety management practices and procedures, utility operations, regulatory requirements, and planning and budgeting. The range of duties includes but is not limited to: unit level planning and maintenance, raw materials inventory control, purchasing and maintenance of equipment, fiscal and administrative services, managing operations within environmental permits, control and scheduling work, determining staff assignments and training needs.  The scope and complexity of the operations for the areas managed are considered high.  The successful candidate will exhibit strong safety leadership, initiative, teamwork.


  • Directly leads an operations group of 52 CPChem employees.  This includes 2 Operations Engineers, 4 Shift Supervisors, 2 Specialists and 44 Operators.
  • Responsible for direct management of process safety activities in all areas of responsibility.
  • Develops plans to accomplish work operations and objectives; arranges and assigns work to use resources efficiently.  Plans, develops and executes daily operations; arranges and assigns work to best use manufacturing resources.
  • Achieves a high level of professional/engineering skill or knowledge in areas of expertise. Serves as a resource on technical and operating-related issues for staff and others; maintains knowledge of related technology, instruments and equipment.
  • Responsible for safe and efficient start-up and normal operation of unit equipment.
  • Responsible for operational readiness and quality to assure completion of manufacturing goals.
  • Plans and monitors the use of expenditures to meet organizational objectives and compliance; prepares budget documents and reports; plans and monitors capital project expenditures.
  • Responsible for implementation of requirements for regulatory and OE issues.
  • Recruits, selects, develops, counsels, and evaluates performance of employees to retain a diverse workforce; administers and ensures compliance with human resources policies and procedures. Observes and assesses work; provides feedback to employees; provide technical supervision; develops knowledge, skills and abilities of employees; plans and supports employees in career development opportunities.
  • Estimated replacement value of facility assets exceed $100MM.
  • Responsible for expense budget of $60MM and capital projects forecast up to $5MM.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in petrochemical process plants. 
  • At least one assignment in a supervisory role of engineers, operators, or technicians. 
  • Demonstrated leadership ability by actively adhering to and also requiring others to demonstrate company values, vision, ethics, and EH&S compliance.
  • Practical knowledge of OSHA regulations, specifically 1910.119 Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals. 
  • Must project a positive, energetic attitude and be proficient influencing large groups, both technical and at plant level.
  • Experience developing and placing contracts with vendors.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to actively manage small to medium projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with all levels of management, exhibiting excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
