Chevron Phillips Chemical is seeking a Laboratory Tester to join our team at the Port Arthur, Texas location.  The Laboratory Tester is responsible for the timely receiving of samples, the safe performance of laboratory tests, and the accurate reporting of lab data.  Responsibilities include the performance of routine procedures, test methods, and activities on hazardous samples and materials that support petrochemical unit processes and product movement operations.  Performs a variety routine maintenance and quality assurance/quality control activities.  Performs a variety of non-testing activities. Interfaces and communicates with all levels of plant employees and varying corporate employees and with customers.  This position is covered by the USW bargaining group.  Requires working a rotating 12-hour shift schedule and works overtime as needed. 

 

 Key Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Performs daily work safely and uses proper personal protective equipment.
  • Performs a variety of physical, wet, instrumental, and gas chromatographic tests.
  • Receives, logs, and reports lab data into Lab Information System.
  • Participates in lab Safety and QA/QC improvement efforts.
  • Routinely communicates and interacts with support chemist, and supervisor.
  • Interfaces and communicates with all levels of plant operations; technical, and marketing personnel, to provide lab services and solutions to customers as they occur.
  • Effectively documents communications.
  • Analyzes control samples and perform quality control activities.
  • Performs non-testing activities (sample cylinder valve replacements, handling of gas cylinders, variety of routine duties, etc.).
  • Perform paperwork activities (printing of certificates of analysis, turnover reports and management of other miscellaneous paperwork as required).
  • Proactively assists co-workers when needed.
  • May be required to perform storeroom and hazardous sample shipping activities.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years work experience in a quality control or related laboratory. 
  • Successful candidate must be highly safety oriented.
  • Must be familiar with Windows and have used computer desktop applications. 
  • Must be a team player; possess analytical skills and excellent communication skills. 
  • Must have excellent time-management and organizational skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • A degree in the sciences with college hours in chemistry. 
  • Petrochemical or refinery plant lab experience. 
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting and performing gas chromatographic tests.
