Purpose/Introduction

We are seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as the 1544 Olefins Superintendent at the Port Arthur Plant. The position manages all operations functions for a 1.9-billion-pounds-per-year, ethylene unit and will report directly to the Operations Manager. Work requires knowledge of process operations, process safety management practices and procedures, utility operations, regulatory requirements, and planning and budgeting. The range of duties includes but is not limited to: unit level planning and maintenance, raw materials inventory control, purchasing and maintenance of equipment, fiscal and administrative services, managing operations within environmental permits, control and scheduling work, determining staff assignments and training needs. The scope and complexity of the operations for the areas managed are considered high. The successful candidate will exhibit strong safety leadership, initiative, and teamwork. #HPCP

Responsibilities

  • Directs and ensures safety activities on the unit are properly conducted including safety audits, incident investigations, implementation of PHA/LOPA action items, and establishing overall safety leadership for the unit.
  • Directs and ensures environmental compliance of the unit including proper compliance reporting, investigation of incidents, initiation of environmental improvement projects, and assists in preparation of Title V operating permit compliance reports.
  • Sets strategic direction for the unit, directs prioritization and execution of large and small capital and expense projects, prepares annual budget, oversees coordination of maintenance activities, leads continuous improvement efforts, and executes other plant and company initiatives.
  • Works with ethylene business management to make sound and timely business decisions and optimize product portfolios, plan production, and resolve business and customer issues.
  • Works with Chevron Pipeline and co-located facility to optimize feedstock supply and product distribution.
  • Supervises and leads a team of shift supervisors, coordinators, and engineers, and also provides indirect leadership to operators in order to accomplish the goals of the unit.
  • Provides direction for support group supervisors, specialists and engineers in their support of unit activities.
  • Sets objectives and metrics for employees, conducts follow up interim meetings with comments, determines performance ratings, finalizes the performance appraisal with close out comments and provides feedback to the employees.
  • Responsible for personnel supervisory activities which include providing a safe and productive work environment, ensuring consistent administration of Plant and Company policies, training and development, conducting performance management activities, maintaining work group expertise, mentoring, and regular coaching.  
  • Demonstrates Commitment Model leadership by assigning people appropriate decision rights.  Sets expectations and coaches to ensure that they are understood and accomplished.
  • Responsible for overseeing all Operations activities for unit turnarounds, including planning activities and daily execution of turnaround.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering with at least 8 years of experience in petrochemical process plants OR High School Diploma/GED with at least 15 years of experience in petrochemical process plants.
  • At least one assignment in a supervisory role of engineers, operators, or technicians.  
  • Demonstrated leadership ability by actively adhering to and also requiring others to demonstrate company values, vision, ethics, and EH&S compliance.
  • Practical knowledge of OSHA regulations, specifically 1910.119 Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals.  
  • Must project a positive, energetic attitude and be proficient influencing large groups, both technical and at plant level.
  • Experience developing and placing contracts with vendors.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to actively manage small to medium projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with all levels of management, exhibiting excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work experience in an Ethylene Unit or supporting an Ethylene unit.
