We are seeking a Control Systems Engineer to join our team at our Sweeny/Old Ocean Facilities in Sweeny, TX.  In this role, the Control Systems Engineer will support both Capital and Expense projects, provide day to day software and hardware support to ensure that the Control Systems meets system design specifications and standards and assist with commissioning efforts of new and/or upgraded control equipment.  


  • Project Support:
    • Work with Engineering Contractors to accomplish project goals
    • Review or develop DCS hardware and software scope
    • Review and comment on engineering design documents including but not limited to Instrument Loop Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Cabinet Layouts, P&IDs etc.
    • Review or develop Control Narratives, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Modbus Mappings, IO Assignment, etc.
    • Responsible for ensuring that the DCS (e.g. I/Os, DCS controllers, control schemes, graphics, alarms, etc.) is configured and installed per design
    • Support Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) e.g. LOPA
    • Support Alarm Documentation & Rationalization (Alarm D&R)
    • Witness or Conduct FAT and 3rd Party Systems IFAT (e.g. Triconex, Allen Bradley, Bently Nevada, etc.)
    • Support Site Acceptance Test (SAT)
    • Support and Coordinate with Reliability / Instrumentation / Electrical Team, Construction Team on Loop Checks and Equipment Startup / Commissioning

Responsibilities (continued)

  • Provide Operations with day-to-day DCS hardware and software needs including but not limited to troubleshooting DCS & 3rd party systems connection issues, DCS graphics/control schemes/logic functions updates, additions of new DCS tags/logic functions/control schemes, etc.
  • Support or provide documents updates as a result of Control Systems software and/or hardware changes  
  • Provide trainings to operations and other disciplines on all Control Systems hardware and software related updates/upgrade
  • Support Operation Unit Trainers with Operating Procedures development
  • Provide 24/7 on call assistance for Control Systems issues
  • Assist Instrument and Electrical Technicians in troubleshooting of Control Systems issues
  • Provide technical expertise to solve Process Control and Field Instrumentation issues
  • Stay abreast of future developments and new features on Control Systems by attending Users Group seminars, vendor schools, and demonstrations
  • Develop and manage Control Systems lifecycle plan
  • Develop templates and guidelines to assist with Control Systems design standardization
  • Perform/coordinate Control Systems software and hardware upgrades
  • Work closely with the IT/ICS group on cyber security initiatives and adhere to ICS Network Security Policy
  • Work closely with the Process Control engineers on APC initiatives
  • Work closely with the Alarm Champion to implement new and updated alarms and adhere to Alarm Management Procedure

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Engineering
  • Must have at least 5 years of related experience
  • Experience in designing and implementing Control Systems software and hardware changes/upgrades
  • Proficient in reading and understanding design documents such as P&IDs, Instrument Loop Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Control Narratives, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Functional Specifications, etc.
  • Self-motivated, able to lead and influence others, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and demonstrate a professional attitude
  • Honeywell DCS experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Yokogawa DCS experience
  • Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering Degree
  • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) Experience and Utilization
