Chevron Phillips Chemical is seeking an Instrumentation Reliability Engineer to join our team in Sweeny, Texas. The primary responsibility of the Instrumentation Reliability Engineer is to provide technical support to the Sweeny/Clemens/Old Ocean Facility to identify and eliminate equipment failures, improve the quality of new installations, operation of assets, maintenance repairs, and ensure work is done in accordance with required standards, best practices and applicable regulations and industry codes.  #HPCP


  • Responsible for the industrial instrumentation field devices (valves, transmitters, sensing elements, flowmeters, gauges, etc.).
  • Monitor and improve reliability metrics (Bad Actors, Asset Strategies, Spare Parts, Criticality, FMEA, PM/PdMs, etc.)
  • Develops reliability plans, preventative maintenance programs, and repair specifications to minimize recurring performance problems on simple or moderately complex equipment. (i.e., inspection strategy, mechanical integrity covered equipment inspection frequencies, equipment overhaul scope)
  • Resolve and plan for obsolescence concerning the facilities instrumentation.
  • Maintain an effective rapport with Leadership, EHS, Maintenance, Operations and Project Engineering groups.
  • Support continuous improvement of the facility’s Mechanical Integrity program.
  • Leverage new technologies.
  • Lead and participate in equipment failure and incident investigation including making improvement recommendations.

Responsibilities (continued)

  • Participate in plant Management of Change as the instrument and electrical subject representative.
  • Provide field support, and participate in check out, commissioning and start up.
  • Follow SCO’s specific practices, standards, guidelines, and procedures for preparation of estimates, scopes, specifications, design, and other deliverables.
  • Evaluate all instrumentation aspects of engineering to ensure all project objectives including safety, technical correctness, budget, constructability, schedule, maintainability, and operability are met.
  • Interface with other cross functional groups, customers, and vendors/suppliers to ensure successful development and execution of projects/repairs/replacement regarding instrumentation.
  • Review and approve instrumentation specifications, drawings, and other documentation; assist in reviewing IFA/IFC construction packages.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience working in the petrochemical, chemical or manufacturing industry.
  • Knowledge of various types of control valves, transmitters (pressure, temperature, flow etc.).
  • Understanding of the engineering documents associated with controls such as: P&ID's, loop sheets, panel layouts, control narratives, logic diagrams, etc. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • PHA Experience.
  • Basic understanding of performance and assessment tools such as RCA, FMEA, MTBR, 5-Why/Why Tree, or others.
  • Experience with SAP and Meridium
  • Experience with Electrical Safe Work Practice (NFPA 70E).
