Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP is currently seeking qualified individuals to join our team as a Process Control/APC Engineer for our Sweeny facility, which is located just south of Houston.  Vanpools, not sponsored by the company, are currently available from Sugar Land for commuting to Sweeny.


This incumbent would join the Sweeny Process Control team and be responsible for working closely with the daily operations of the Olefins and NGL fractionation units to provide resources for control related project implementation as well as the maintenance of those applications. 


  • Improve, develop, implement and maintain regulatory control strategies that improve plant safety, profitability and efficiency.
  • Manage current APC applications including Aspen Tech DMCplus/DMC3 applications, as well as develop and implement new control applications.
  • Be a self-starter and identify new control opportunities. Develop cost/benefits studies seeking to realize opportunities.
  • Review and manage the documentation of system standards, control procedures, DCS architecture and control schemes.
  • Provide work direction for DCS technicians and contract control personnel, as needed.
  • Participate in hazard analysis studies supporting plant improvement teams, as needed.
  • Support units by trouble shooting control related issues that impact operations.
  • Create and provide instruction for training on control subjects as needed.
  • Support site in process control related off-hour call out duties, as needed.
  • Work with IT and vendors to maintain and upgrade APC related software, as needed.
  • Support the expense and capital budget process when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in process controls and have keen interests in developing further skills in advanced process controls. 
  • Must have at least 5 years of regulatory control scheme design and implementation on an olefins unit, petrochemical or refining process.
  • Knowledge of petrochemical processes, preferably those related to manufacturing of ethylene.
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience implementing and maintaining multivariable model-based controllers, preferably Aspen Tech's DMCplus/DMC3.
  • Be willingness to mentor and train plant personnel on process control topics.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills for supporting all aspects of the APC and process control infrastructure.
  • Should be capable of all aspects of project management as related to process control items.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Chemical Engineering or Process Controls
  • Experience in process modeling with AspenPlus
  • Keen interest in unit operations and troubleshooting underlying chemical process
  • Honeywell TPS, Honeywell Experion DCS experience
  • Experience at a PSM facility
  • Experience with PHD Uniformance/Insight
  • Exposure to Alarm Management
  • Experience implementing State Based Alarming
