Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) is seeking qualified candidates motivated and equipped to assist the company in pursuing and protecting its global legal interests as the Assistant General Counsel Commercial, Olefins, Specialties, Saudi & Europe.  This position based in The Woodlands, Texas, reports directly to the Senior Vice President, Legal & Public Affairs.  The CPChem Legal & Public Affairs Department is comprised of approximately 60 professionals responsible for managing legal, communications, and government affairs activities across CPChem’s global operations.


This is a senior position, involving regular interaction with CPChem’s executive management, requiring the ability to work with considerable autonomy, and serving as the senior legal advisor for the assigned business units. The position directly or indirectly supervises a staff of lawyers and other professionals responsible for domestic and international commercial legal activities. The successful candidate will have direct accountability for counseling management and other employees regarding complex commercial negotiations, emerging disputes, major projects and other strategic transactions, and joint venture development, support, and governance. This trusted advisor role is relied upon to provide seasoned leadership, direction, and support for other functional areas in the department as well. The position also has extensive accountability for developing these skill sets in other members of the Legal team. Substantial budgetary and outside counsel management is required, including on major transactions. 


Candidates must demonstrate the skills and judgment necessary to advise executives and other clients with confidence regarding high profile transactions, and to otherwise provide prompt and reasoned advice on critical legal and strategic commercial issues. These skills are required in all cases without extensive supervision.


Note: Due to the varied nature of travel and direct engagement associated with the requirements of this position, Covid-19 vaccination is required. 


Required Qualifications:

  • Law degree from a nationally accredited law school
  • Must have at least 12 years of experience in a corporate legal department or in private practice with relevant commercial, project, supervisory, and administrative responsibilities
  • Admission to practice before a U.S. state bar, preferably Texas (Note: Admission to State Bar of Texas will be required in any event after a reasonable period of time)
  • Consistently exhibits strong work ethic and highest ethical standards
  • Lead attorney experience with broad range of transactional work, including not only large deals but also day-to-day counseling on routine transactional matters
  • Demonstrated experience advising senior executives on complex commercial matters, negotiations and prudent legal and risk management practices
  • Strong performer in high volume periods involving multiple client relationships, projects, and direct reports
  • Significant enterprise leadership experience with broad range of commercial legal matters and issues, including:


    • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams pursuing complex transactions
    • Effective at visualizing and implementing strategies to build multi-dimensional organizational support and compliance, including on sensitive legal matters.


  • Accomplished track record supervising, motivating, and developing a team of seasoned legal staff (attorneys and support staff)
  • Proven capability to assume budgetary responsibility for managing third party service providers, including direct management of outside counsel of varying firm sizes and expense
  • Literate in relevant compliance topics, including antitrust and international trade as well as laws and policies applicable to US and Western companies with international operations
  • Able to apply traditional commercial principles and risk-based analysis in order to effectively integrate legal planning into business strategies
  • Highly effective at distilling and explaining complex legal issues to personnel at all levels of the organization
  • General proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and contract and docket management platforms


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Literacy in industrial and product-based sustainability topics
  • Prior corporate governance process experience
