Purpose/Introduction

As the company's storytellers, the Public Affairs department focuses on building the company's brand and reputation, communicating company information and being active members of the communities where we work.  Public Affairs drives government relations, media relations, crisis communications, community involvement, marketing communications, internal/external communications and digital communications to disseminate business objectives, news and information that effectively engages internal and external stakeholders.

 

Chevron Phillips Chemical is seeking a Senior External Communications Advisor to join the Legal & Public Affairs organization located at the company’s headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas. The Senior External Communications Advisor drives strategic external communications initiatives to advance business objectives while protecting and enhancing the reputation of the company. Key responsibilities include creating external communications deliverables such as press releases, media statements and executive talking points; developing and maintaining relationships with top-tier and trade journalists; supporting the CEO and executive leadership at external conferences and events; facilitating the company’s external communications approval process; and managing our social media presence. This individual will also play a critical role on the company’s crisis communications team, media training company leaders and serving as a company spokesperson. The successful candidate will be results oriented and agile with a collaborative mindset and the ability to identify, engage and influence broad stakeholder groups across the organization. This individual will report to the External Communications Lead.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic communication plans that advance the company’s business objectives.
  • Respond to crisis events and support crisis communications preparation and training.
  • Field incoming media inquiries.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with media contacts and other external stakeholders while assessing and prioritizing short- and long-term media opportunities that reflect positively upon the company’s business interests, operations and corporate functions.
  • Pitch story ideas and event coverage to relevant media outlets, including top-tier, local, regional and trade opportunities.
  • Write news releases and web content and prepare presentations and talking points, fact sheets and Q&A documents.
  • Manage the company’s organic social media presence – including content development, posting and leveraging analytics to make improvements in target audience engagement.
  • Develop and implement paid media campaigns and email marketing campaigns as part of lead generation and strategic brand awareness efforts.
  • Identify, secure and support external speaking opportunities for senior leaders that align with the company’s business objectives.
  • Collaborate with Government Affairs team to support stakeholder advocacy with a focus on Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) issues.
  • Maintain strong governance over the company’s corporate approval process. 
  • Perform other internal and external communications duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, drafting news articles for internal audiences, facilitating photo and video shoots, assisting with company events, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum education of bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of five years of communications experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage full lifecycle communications initiatives, projects, campaigns, or processes
  • Media or media relations experience
  • Experience with organic social and paid media campaigns and social media software
  • Experience collecting, analyzing and reporting on digital channel performance data

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or related discipline
  • Previous experience working for a print, broadcast or online news outlet or a public relations, advertising or marketing firm
  • Petrochemical, energy, or oil and gas industry communications experience
  • Experience using CRM to automate digital campaigns and manage contact databases
  • Experience using a CMS
