Purpose/Introduction

Chevron Phillips Chemical (CP Chem) is seeking qualified candidates with demonstrated legal analytical skills, and a keen interest in EHSS regulations and legal support for manufacturing operations to join our team as an EHS&S and Manufacturing Legal Summer Intern. This 8-week paid internship provides hands-on experience working in-house, offering exposure to corporate legal affairs, regulatory compliance, transactional work, and legal research and writing. This role would provide valuable experience in the intersection of law, environmental stewardship, and industrial operations while working closely with experienced counsel at a major chemical company.

The position is based in CPChem’s headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas, and reports to the EHSS Counsel. CPChem's legal department numbers over 50 professionals, which includes over 20 lawyers.

 

Responsibilities

  • Regulatory Compliance Support: Assist in monitoring and responding to federal regulatory and political trends that could impact EHSS and manufacturing operations (Example Project: develop tool to monitor EHSS developments stemming from new Trump Administration actions and evaluate impacts to CPChem)
  • Risk Management Evaluation: Identify potential EHSS risks to CPChem and assist in developing mitigation strategies (Example Project: research recent EPA and TCEQ enforcement actions in the chemical industry and propose best practices to mitigate risks).
  • Legal Research and Analysis: Conduct research and analysis on EHSS laws, regulations, and policies to support CPChem’s compliance and operational excellence initiatives. (Example Project: evaluate the legal framework around carbon credit programs, how the trading system works, how it relates to CPChem, and compliance strategies).
  • Contract Review and Drafting: Analyze vendor and service agreements to identify potential legal risks, collaborate with internal stakeholders to align contract terms with company policies and industry best practices, support contract negotiations with external parties, and assist in maintaining accurate contract records and documentation (Example Projects: (1) maintain accurate plant records repository in CP Chem’s Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) system; Example Project and (2) ensure all project contracts reflect CP Chem’s updated corporate address, coordinating with internal stakeholders to facilitate necessary amendments)
  • Business Transactions Assistance: Evaluate potential environmental liabilities and exposures in corporate transactions and perform general due diligence (Example Project: develop checklist for assessing environmental liabilities in corporate transactions)

Required Qualifications

  • 1L or rising 2L at an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Strong interest in EHSS law, corporate law and/or manufacturing practices.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Law school transcript and writing sample will be required
