Purpose/Introduction

The Senior Electrical Engineer in the Central Engineering Group will function as a company Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all electrical power system designs and distribution equipment reliability.  This position is responsible for overall coordination and development of detailed designs and installation of electrical systems required to support the company’s project execution teams worldwide.  This engineer will frequently collaborate with facility Electrical Engineers assigned to project and reliability roles and will also collaborate with owner-company and electrical utility supplier SMEs.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the company Engineering Standards Manager and site Electrical Engineers to develop, deploy, and maintain specifications, design best practices and guidelines, and reliability standards for the electrical systems used by the company projects and manufacturing facilities.
  • Support project teams and plant personnel in the interpretation of both company and industry specifications for electrical systems and equipment.
  • Recommend / provide training to plant engineering and maintenance personnel.
  • Respond to manufacturing facility emergencies regarding critical equipment failures when maintenance expertise is not sufficient to address the situation.
  • Participate in root cause investigations on equipment failures and development of long-term reliability solutions.
  • Advise maintenance and reliability Representatives at manufacturing facilities in the setup of reliability and inspection programs for power system distribution equipment.
  • Assist project teams with scope development in front end definition, electrical area classification, and conduct design reviews to ensure designs meet company requirements.
  • Work with outside companies, electrical utilities, and contractors in support of projects.
  • Provide mentoring to less experienced engineers and support growth of in-house competency.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited University with a minimum of 10 years proven experience in petrochemical plant or refinery electrical design, maintenance, and reliability.
  • Extensive experience in testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintaining of low and high voltage electrical equipment.
  • Industrial power experience and knowledge of IEEE/NFPA required for compliance and system analysis (e.g. short circuit analysis, protective relay modeling and coordination, arc flash analysis, power load analysis, transformer sizing,  ground grid design, power factor correction, reliability, etc.)
  • Experience performing power systems studies calculations with power system analysis software such as ETAP.
  • Outstanding practical knowledge of industry codes and standards:  API, NFPA, ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, NETA, NEC, and NESC.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15 years of experience proven experience in petrochemical plant or refinery electrical design, maintenance, and reliability.
  • A focus on power as part of the Electrical Engineering degree
  • Experience related to design, construction and startup support for a large petrochemical or refinery project using phased project execution process.
  • Experience in safety leadership and a demonstrated understanding of behavioral-based safety practices.
  • Prior experience in an enterprise "home office" central support, or center of excellence
  • Demonstrated ability to work from a position of credible influence based on electrical knowledge versus a position of authority.

       Work Location:

  • Preferred location is The Woodlands, TX, but could sit at one of our Manufacturing locations.
  • Must be able to travel internationally.
  • Most travel in the Houston and Southeast Texas area with occasional domestic air or international trips.
